Despite their proliferation, there has been very little research on these types of markets in Latin America. This study is aimed at analyzing one of them, the 16 de Julio Market in the city of El Alto, Bolivia, and studying the relationship between the productive and commercial activities that take place there as part of the informal economy and a number of business initiatives that involve the usage – though not particularly systematic or deliberate – of information and communications technologies (ICTs), and especially mobile telephony. The study also considers the role played by education in this context.
